REBELS KILL NINE IN AFGHANISTAN

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Suspected Taliban rebels have ambushed a convoy of Afghan police officers in the southern Kandahar province, killing seven and apparently abducting two others.

In a separate incident, the Taliban said they had beheaded two Afghan civilians in the southern province of Uruzgan for working as translators for U.S. forces, the BBC reported Thursday.

The rebels attacked the police convoy Wednesday as it drove toward Kandahar city, reportedly destroying two police vehicles with rockets. Police in one vehicle reportedly fled the scene, and two other officers were missing.

A Taliban commander telephoned news agencies Wednesday to report the beheadings of the two civilians, who had been abducted Monday. The governor of Uruzgan province told reporters that the Taliban were mistaken in assuming the two were working for the United States.

In eastern Paktia province, an Afghan army officer opened fire on two U.S. soldiers at a joint base, wounding them. U.S. forces returned fire and killed the Afghan. An Afghan army general said it was not clear why the Afghan had shot at the Americans.
